what makes a good song lyric?

(and how important to you are the lyrics compared to all the other parts of a song?)

Define "good" first. :)

I think it depends on a lot of factors. For me lyrics CAN be incredibility important. They can speak a message or convey a feeling, you can even feel one with some. But then music is still music without lyrics. I love instrumentals just as much as I do lyrical songs. But it really does depend.

Example, I love Jeffrey Lewis's lyrics because I feel I can relate to them, I feel they make sense and he's saying what we think. However I Interpol's lyrics because they are almost a flowery poem. Then again I can love lyrics that really make little sense but simply sound lovely in the way they sound and are produced.

So answer you question I think a good song lyric is either: One that makes you feel an emotion, one that makes you think, one that sounds beautiful or one that sounds interesting. I guess I also have room for comical lyrics as they make me smile through clever wit (I.e. Tim Minchin).

As a favortie I would have to say I love lyrics that convey an emotion (added by the music itself conveying it). Such as Colt or Kimya Dawson.
